Continuum by Allen Curnow

PEEP - Continuum

Curnow depicts magnificently his state of mind in the poem as continuously wavering, and shows how he is  submerged in a deep pool of thoughts. The readers witness his impatience, his restlessness, despite his focus and concentration on searching for new ideas. The readers understand how he is lost in his pool of thoughts and can understand that it is 'not possible' to 'get off to sleep', in that state of mind late at night.

  1. In the beginning of the poem, the reader is invited to witness the lack of clarity and confusion in curnows mind, how he has an idea, a theme for a poem so brilliant that he is unable to find the perfect example to present his thoughts and create his ground breaking poem. This confusion is brought out in his struggle to get his idea across and constantly contradicts himself creating no progress in his half-baked poem. He claims that his current protagonist, the moon, ‘does nothing at all’ and later conveys to the readers that the reference, in terms of the poet, was ‘about myself’. The poet continues his conquest to express his mystical thought lingering in his mind but is unable to find the inspiration or motivation to relate it to a protagonist. His failure to relate his idea proves that he is going through a rough phase and his mind is almost blank. The randomness in his poem blends together to make a unique and interesting poem and at the same time proves his lack of confidence and constant search for inspiration.
